The wait is over...the pumpkin and squash weights!

Here are the results from the weigh off. Congratulations to all the growers!

Field Pumpkin:
Jutras and his 139.5 pound field pumpkin.

Squash:
Adams' 106.5 pound squash.

Andrews' 111 pound squash.

Sandercock's 530 pound squash.

Jutras won the squash category with his 840 pound giant green squash!

Youth division:
Lombardi grew this 917 pound pumpkin in her backyard!

Giant pumpkins:
Maydan's first entry, his 579.5 pound pumpkin.

Richardson's 598 pound pumpkin.

Maydan's 778.5 pound pumpkin.

Spectators were waiting to see the first pumpkin go over 1,000 pounds. Spencer's pumpkin weighed in at 1,004 pounds!

Adams' pumpkin weighed in at 1,445.5 pounds.

Box's giant pumpkin weighed in at 1,503.5 pounds.

Wallace's pumpkin weighed in at 1,507 pounds. Wallace is a 2 time world record holder, and grew the first pumpkin to weigh in at over 2,000 pounds. Seeds that from that giant were used to grow several of the top pumpkins in this year's weigh off (including the 1st and 2nd place giants).

Vincent's pumpkin weighed in at 1,524,5 pounds.

Sperry's pumpkin weighed in at 1,563.5 pounds.

Giarrusso's pumpkin weighed in at 1,621.5 pounds! Amazing! Giarrusso grows his pumpkins on an island, and this pumpkin was brought over by barge to come to the weigh off.

Last year, Nick Huydic won the giant pumpkin weigh off with a giant who weighed in at 1,290.5 pounds. This year, he brought his giant, named Wally Coyote to the scale, and hit our top mark....1,625.5 pounds. He took 1st place by 4 pounds over Giarrusso.

The long gourd category was a close race, with one inch separating 1st and 2nd place. First place measured 102" and second place measured 101".

Time to get on the scale...Ridgefield Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off 2014

The day we have all been waiting for....the Ridgefield Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off! Time to get these backyard giants on the scale. We could not have wished for a more perfect day. The sun was shining, the park was filled with giant pumpkins, vendors, exhibitors, music, food, families, friends and fun.

I think the photos tell the story best, so I will let them speak for themselves..enjoy!

The winning field pumpkin weighed in at 139.5 pounds!

The winner in the youth category grew a giant 917 pound pumpkin! Congratulations!

I hope you recognize this pumpkin from my blog. It is my friend's giant. He weighed heavier than expected, so we are very happy.

You may recognize the grower's name from last year's weigh off photos....yes, Nick Huydic came back and won it again. Last year, his giant weighed in at 1290.5 pounds. This year, his pumpkin surpassed that weight by over 300 pounds, weighing in at 1,625.5 pounds! Congratulations!

Check back tomorrow to see pictures of all the pumpkins and squash with their weights and their growers!

T'was the night before the giant pumpkin weigh off.

"T'was the night before the weigh off,
and all through the town,
giant pumpkins were lifted,
up high off the ground"
(my apologies to Clement Clark Moore)

Ridgefield's Giant Pumpkin and Squash Weigh Off is tomorrow, so tonight the pumpkins were cut off the vine and lifted high off the ground, into the back of a pick up truck. Months and months of planning, watering, watching, waiting, hoping...tomorrow, the pumpkin will make it onto the scale.

There is a sigh of relief as the pumpkin makes it successfully off the ground, successfully into the truck, and many more tomorrow...as the pumpkin makes it successfully off the truck (moving pumpkins this big on to and off the truck is stressful) and successfully onto the scale.

It has been such an amazing opportunity for me to watch these giants grow from tiny seeds this year.

Thank you to my friend, Steve, for allowing me to spend so much time in the pumpkin patch photographing his giant pumpkins. As someone who loves fall, spending time photographing these giants as they grow means so much to me, and I am so grateful.

Thank you, Steve, and good luck tomorrow at the weigh off.

I will be updating the blog tomorrow night with the story of the weigh off.  Please be sure to check back tomorrow.

I will be posting updates from the weigh off tomorrow to the official weigh off event page - Ridgefield's Pumpkin Weigh Off and on my Facebook page, Instagram and Twitter.
