Memorial Day 2015

The Memorial Day Parade in my town is one of my favorite events of the year (up there with Halloween). This year, for the first time, I joined my children and marched in the parade. I don't have as many photos as previous years, but many many memories of a special day.

I also learned something about myself….just as I can't sit on the sidelines and watch the parade without getting a bit teary eyed, it seems I can't march in the parade either without getting teary eyed. The feeling of gratitude is overwhelming.

Thanksgiving Parade 2013

It was cold and windy today...seriously cold and windy. We were determined to see the parade, bundled up and headed down to the parade route. We looked up the street and saw all the open spaces along the sidewalk; it began to feel like a private parade just for us! As we waited for the parade to begin, we heard the balloons had been grounded because the wind was too strong. While it was a little disappointing, we knew the marching bands, floats clowns and other performers would still make it a lot of fun.

I think the photos speak for themselves, so I will let them show you the parade.

Thanksgiving Parade...

My love of fall extends beyond Halloween. I love Thanksgiving. I love thinking about all the things I have to be thankful for, turkey and stuffing, pumpkin pie (especially for breakfast, the day after Thanksgiving), watching the parade, seeing Santa at the end. I love it all.

                                                                                                                          Our Thanksgiving celebrations began a little early this year as we visited a nearby parade this past weekend.

The balloons had to "limbo" under the traffic lights.

The Lorax balloon will be making its appearance in cities that are considered "green."  We were so excited to see it.

There were so many giant balloons. I loved hearing everyone shout with excitement when they saw them. The balloon handlers were amazing, and would turn the balloons completely around when the crowd shouted "spin."

I remember seeing the Kermit balloon on television on Thanksgiving morning and being so excited (I loved Kermit).  Even though it is many years later, it was still really great to see him in person.

Memorial Day....

I think Memorial Day might just be one of my favourite days of the year.  I love the parades, communities coming together, and the overwhelming feeling of gratitude for those who have given so much for our freedom.

The pictures below are a departure from the abandoned series I've been working on lately.  I love photographing life in my town.

The first year we went to this parade, I was surprised that a parade could bring tears to my eyes. Every year since, has been the same. I can not watch this parade without getting teary eyed.  

I've decided to let the photos tell the story of the parade.

A moment of silence at the graves of the American and British soldiers who died fighting in the Revolution War.

I needed one last walk up Main Street last night to soak up the last bits of Memorial Day. The setting sun, the giant flag, the perfect blue sky....no words can truly sum it up.
