Another visit to the Cornish Estate

You may remember my previous visit to the Cornish Estate from my previous posts. It has been a year since we visited, and this is one of those places that calls me back. So we decided it was time for a road trip and a hike to a favorite forgotten spot.

We hiked up to the house, and it was just as I remembered….amazing.

The stack of fireplaces balancing in the center of the structure still capture my immediate attention, however it is the giant arched window that is my most favorite spot here. Imagine how beautiful that giant window must have been. Imagine the light coming through it, watching the sun set or snowflakes gently falling.

I love seeing the tiles that remain on the fireplaces. While time has not been kind to this building those last few tiles remain…a reminder of the beautiful details this house once possessed.

It's impossible to stand in the middle of the remains of this house and not try to picture what it must have looked like…so many fireplaces, so many fabulous windows, and so much space.

More favorites from the Cornish Estate

I keep looking through the photos from our visit to the Cornish Estate remains and it seems like each photo is shouting "don't forget me," so I need to show you a bit more of this magical place. You can find my previous posts here and here and my article on Hamlet Hub.

The pool. Yes, this estate really had it all....a greenhouse, about a million fireplaces (ok, I exaggerate just a little), the longest windy driveway up the side of a mountain and even a pool.

The remains of an iron fence against a tree.

The more we wandered, the more we interesting things we found.

The photo above is one of my favorites from our visit. It was our first view of the tower of chimneys and I was in awe. Four chimneys stacked on top of each other. The photo below shows the other side of the tower of chimneys.

We stood in the center of the remains and felt so tiny in this giant structure. We looked up at the giant windows, the towers of chimneys and tried to imagine how beautiful this place must have been.

To me, this place felt magical.

More from The Cornish Estate...the Greenhouse

We wander through the remains of the Cornish Estate. If you missed my previous post, you can view it here. We were in awe of how amazing this house must have been, and thrilled we were able to find it and wander the remains.

As we made our way around the outside of the house, we saw this.....the remains of the greenhouse.

We were excited to have even more to explore. The front of the building was amazing.

The remains from the big front doors.
We followed the path up and around the back of the greenhouse so we could look down on it. The entire frame seems to still be there (minus the glass).

The view of the house from the upper trail. The driveway came up through those arches.

Once, there was a magical estate on a mountain.

Over the weekend, we set out to find this magical place. I had heard about it, saw pictures of it, but knew that I needed to make the trip here to see this amazing forgotten place for myself. I studied maps of the area trying to figure out exactly where it was. Once I was sure, we set out on our journey.

It was a perfect day for a hike. As we made our way up the path, I was getting nervous that I misjudged where it would be. We continued on, and suddenly, through the trees, we saw it.

What I originally set out to find were the stacks of fireplaces. They were so beautiful, so perfectly balanced, and really made me imagine what the inside of this estate must have been like. I think we counted around ten fireplaces. There were even remains of the tile still attached to a few.

The windows....take my breath away kind of windows. I think I may be a bit obsessed with that giant arched window. Can you imagine how beautiful that must have been when this estate was standing in its former glory?

Standing inside the remains taking in the windows, the fireplaces, the details that still remained.....this building was truly magical.

It was more amazing that I had hoped it could be. There is so much more I can't wait to show you, but it was too much to fit in one post. Be sure to check back here on Friday to see more.

The forgotten buildings

I know I haven't blogged in a while, so my comeback needs to be big. We ended up in an area yesterday near some fabulous forgotten buildings. I knew I needed to find them, and somehow quickly ended up in just the right spot.

Standing in front of this building there was so much to take in. The details on the building...it must have been beautiful once. The state of decay and destruction...how did it go from beautiful to destroyed? The graffiti...I normally get upset when I see graffiti on forgotten places, but some of this graffiti was amazing, and I wanted to study it. It wasn't a quick spray of paint, it was a picture, a story, a message.

I wandered among these skeletons of buildings wondering what they were like years ago when they were filled with life. Even in their forgotten state, they were beautiful. Boarded widows, broken glass and yet, you could still see the details that made them special.

Last stop on our tour was the Savoy Hotel. One of those take your breath away places. It was HUGE. Seriously huge and yet somehow forgotten. How does a place this big become forgotten. I am in awe of this place and planning another visit back her soon.

We found this on a road trip.

A few months ago we went on a small road trip. I love road trips. I love the thrill of finding something fabulous along the way. I love the food too (all great road trips must have great food). This road trip did not disappoint. We found a fabulous restaurant, had plans to stop at my favorite forgotten school and we found this amazing building.

It was massive. I haven't discovered much on it yet, so if anyone reading this knows anything about it, please comment or email me (jessicacollinsphotography@gmail.com). I'm curious to know more about this beauty.

The tower just screamed to be photographed. The window below is the third floor of the tower. I love the peeling paint on the wall. It looks like a map of forgotten days.

We all know I have a weakness for doors and windows. These doors are definitely among my favorites.
