What little remains....a train station in the woods.

I noticed this support post while driving down a parkway in New York. While many might not notice this or give it a second thought, I was immediately intrigued. I soon discovered this was the remains of a train station. I knew I needed to see it up close.

I ended up at an event nearby, and knew I couldn't head home without a quick stop to see this place. I never explore alone (because I'm a big chicken), but I had to at least see it. I parked, pulled on boots, and ran, camera in hand, down the path to find this train station.

The platform.

Not much remains, but it was still a really cool find. I wanted to explore more, but I didn't want to wander too far into the woods alone. I will be heading back to explore more and take more pictures.

I will definitely be heading back to explore more and find out more about the history of this forgotten place.

Under the bridge and through the woods....

I realized I never blogged about this fabulous place I love. A long long time ago there was a factory here and a houses and it must have been amazing.  Not much remains, but it is still beautiful.  To get to the factory remains, we have to pass under this bridge.  I didn't think it would be quite this pretty under a bridge.

I love that there is a no trespassing sign next to an open gate.  There wasn't anything to see on the other side of the gate.

There is very little left of the factory, and nature has taken over; however, it is a beautiful place to visit.

We enjoyed walking the trails around the property. It was so peaceful.

There was a house here that burned down years ago.  All that remains is a giant chimney and a round structure nearby. I couldn't figure out what it was.  It had a doorway and metal wrapped around it.  It sat on a hill above the house.
The mystery round structure.
All that remains on another house.
There was also a fabulous guard tower high on a hill nearby.  I previously blogged about it -- Guard Tower

the remains of a Mansion

On our first visit to Portland, we knew we wanted to see the remains of Goddard Mansion.  I wasn't expecting there to be much left...maybe some corner stones, perhaps a fireplace.  I would have been thrilled to see just that, as I think any remains are beautiful.  We followed the path to the mansion and were surprised when we saw this beauty in front of us.

The mansion was built in the 1850s.  It was the home of Colonel John Goddard and his family who lived here until the late 1800s.

Of course, the windows are my favorite part.

In 1898, the US Army aquired the mansion.  It was turned into housing for married enlisted service men and their families who were stationed at Fort Williams.

I just loved the stairs to nowhere.

We continued on to visit the Fort.

This was my favorite photo from the Fort.
